About This Course

This A level Physics course is designed to provide a seamless transition from previous studies and develop the students’ interest and enthusiasm for physics.

After each chapter there will be a tutor marked assignment. This will be marked online by your tutor. You will be sent a welcome letter by your tutor, as soon as you make contact, which will outline assignment submission in more detail.

There is an enhanced practical element to the new A level award which expects students to reflect on practical physics knowledge as well as theoretical. There are 16 Core Practicals which must be undertaken at an external examination centre. Please contact an examination centre with regard to booking your practical

All distance learning students should download the Private Candidates Handbook from Edexcel’s website which gives you guidance on finding an examination centre and registering. Likewise, International students need to download the specific handbook for them, which will give alternative examination arrangements etc.

The website is: http://qualifications.pearson.com/en/home.html

Your tutor will give you various resource sites to visit and there is extra material on the On Campus area on our website. In addition there are several supporting texts books for this course but again this depends on which approach you are following and which book best suits your individual needs.

Benn, Mike and George, Graham (2015) Edexcel A Level Physics Student Book 1, Hodder Education

Akrill, Tim and George, Graham, (2015) Edexcel A level Physics Student Book 2, Hodder Education

The blend of student’s books and supporting online resources allow us to personalise the delivery of the course to meet students’ needs and develop the skills required to tackle “Working as a Physicist” and practical assessment.

Examination Information

Students are required to arrange and pay for their A Level Physics examinations and manage the course work element if the subject requires this. Students must check the relevant examination board website for further information and final examination sitting dates for the specification.

All examinations are held during the May / June exam period of every year.

A Level Physics Course Content

A Level Physics Topics covered are:

Mechanics, Waves, Materials, Electric Circuits, The Particle Nature of Light, Further Mechanics, Gravitational Fields, Electric Fields, Magnetic Fields, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Oscillations, Thermodynamics, Space and Nuclear Radiation.

A Level Physics Practicals

The A-Level can now be reported as a “Grade with practical endorsement” or a “Grade without practical endorsement.” This part of the course DOES impact on the final A-Level grade, by omitting this element, it may lead to being rejected by universities – students will have to check with their chosen or desired universities the ramifications of an A-Level without practical endorsement.

A Level Physics Assessment

The whole course is assessment objectives based and combines a number of learning outcome expectations. The assessment objective weightings for the A level award are as follows:

AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures. 31%-33%

AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures in both a theoretical and practical context and when handling qualitative and quantitative data. 41% – 43%

AO3: Analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information, ideas and evidence, including in relation to issues, to make judgements and reach conclusions and develop and refine practical design and procedures. 25% – 27%.

The A level is assessed at the end of the course in June of the final year. There are three exams,
Exam 1: 1 hour 45 minutes
Exam 2: 1 hour 45 minutes
Exam 3: 2 hours 30 minutes In addition, 12-16 Core Practicals need to be taken for the Science Practical Endorsement.

Progression

Our A Level Physics programmes are eligible for UCAS points, making them a great choice for students aiming to progress to University. UCAS points are awarded according to the grade earned, please see below for details.

A levels are also widely recognised by employers and are useful for students looking to progress their careers or meet requirements for promotion.

UCAS Points Table

A* = 56
A = 48
B = 40
C = 32
